A walking challenge app built around one rising daily goal
Stepr is a walking challenge app for friends, families and workplaces on iPhone. Rather than counting toward a distance or a monthly total, every player has to clear a daily step goal that starts at 2,000 and climbs by 250 a day. Miss it and you are out; the last one walking wins. Steps are read from Apple Health and the motion sensor, and joining is free.
Distance challenges versus daily-goal challenges
Walk-to-a-destination challenges are lovely for a month and then the map is done. Total-distance challenges reward whoever had the most free time. A daily-goal challenge is different: it asks the same fair question of everyone every day, and because the goal only rises, the challenge gets interesting exactly when other formats go quiet.
It also fits real walking. 2,000 steps on day one is a short walk to coffee. By day 20 the bar is 6,750, which is a proper daily habit, and the people still in are the ones who built it.
What a week looks like
Day one, everyone joins with the code and clears 2,000 steps without thinking about it. By the weekend the bar is around 3,500 and the group chat has started. Week two is where the first friends drop out, usually on a rainy Tuesday, and the app tells the rest who is still standing. Week three onward is the walk after dinner that nobody used to take.
Steps sync in the background, and at 9 pm the app tells you if you are short for the day, so nobody loses on a technicality.
Groups it suits
Friend groups and family chats, office teams, running clubs in the off-season, church small groups, and anyone who has tried a screenshot-based step competition and watched it fade. Leagues are invite-only, hold up to 100 players, and can be split into duo or team lobbies so people survive together.
Cost and privacy
Joining is free; hosting is $18.99 once for a league or $9.99 a month for unlimited leagues, and free during launch. Members see your display name, whether you are still in, today's steps and your total. Your email and raw health data are never shared, and there are no cash pots.
Questions people ask
Is there a free walking challenge app with friends?
Stepr is free to join for every participant. The person hosting pays a small one-off or monthly fee after launch; during launch, hosting is free as well.
Does a walking challenge app need a fitness tracker?
No. Stepr reads the iPhone's built-in motion sensor, so the phone in your pocket is enough. An Apple Watch, Garmin or Fitbit that writes to Apple Health counts as well.
Can I do a walking challenge with someone in another time zone?
Yes. The league has one time zone, chosen by the commissioner, and every day rolls over at midnight there, so everyone faces the same deadline.
