Can you do a step challenge on Apple Watch?
By Joseph Tung, who makes Stepr · Updated September 30, 2026
Not directly. Apple Watch has no step challenge. What it has is Activity competitions: seven days, one friend at a time, scored on how much of your Activity rings you close rather than on steps. To run a real step challenge with an Apple Watch, use an app that reads steps from Apple Health, where your Watch already writes them, so friends on Apple Watch, Fitbit, Garmin or just an iPhone can all compete on the same number.
What Apple Watch offers instead: Activity competitions
Apple's built-in competition is between you and one friend who shares their activity with you. It lasts seven days. You get a point for every percent you add to your rings each day, up to 600 points a day, so the most anyone can score in a week is 4,200. The person with the most points at the end wins, and the Watch tells you during the week whether you are ahead or behind.
To start one, open the Activity app on your Apple Watch, tap a friend's name, scroll down, tap Compete, then Invite, and wait for them to accept. You both need an Apple Watch and need to be sharing activity with each other first.
Why that is not a step challenge
Activity rings measure active calories, exercise minutes and standing hours against each person's own goals. That makes a competition fair between people of different fitness, but it means steps do not decide it: someone with a low Move goal can out-score someone who walked twice as far. People searching for a step challenge usually want the opposite, one number that everyone is measured on.
It is also strictly one-on-one. There is no group leaderboard, so a family, an office or a group of friends cannot all compete in one table, and anyone without an Apple Watch cannot take part at all.
How to run a real step challenge with an Apple Watch
Every step your Apple Watch counts is written to the Health app on your iPhone, which combines Watch and iPhone steps without counting them twice. A step challenge app that reads Apple Health therefore gets your Watch steps automatically, with nothing to connect.
Stepr works that way. One person starts a league, sets the day-one goal and how much it rises each day, and shares a six-character code. Up to 100 people join from their own iPhones. Everyone's steps come from the iPhone's motion sensor and Apple Health, so wearing a Watch simply means your steps are counted even when your phone is on the desk. Nothing can be typed in, and the league can see which device recorded each person's count.
Apple Watch, Fitbit and Garmin in the same challenge
Because Stepr reads Apple Health rather than one brand's app, mixed groups work as long as everyone has an iPhone. Garmin Connect can write steps to Apple Health from its settings. Fitbit, now part of the Google Health app, has been able to sync steps to Apple Health since August 2026: in Google Health, open Connections, then Apps and services, and add Apple Health.
The one real limit is the phone. Stepr is iPhone-only today, so a friend with an Android phone can watch the live standings from the invite link but cannot compete.
Can you cheat steps on Apple Watch?
Any motion sensor can be fooled a little, by swinging an arm or strapping a phone to something that moves. What turns a challenge into an argument, though, is manual entry, and that is easy to remove. Stepr ignores steps typed into the Health app by hand, reads only from trusted sources such as Apple's own sensors and fitness trackers, signs each report from the phone, and shows everyone which device recorded each count, so a suspicious number is visible rather than hidden.
Questions people ask
Can you do a step challenge on Apple Watch?
Not with Apple's built-in tools. Apple Watch competitions are one-on-one, last seven days and score Activity rings, not steps. For a step challenge, use an app that reads steps from Apple Health, where the Watch writes them automatically.
How do Apple Watch competition points work?
You earn a point for every percent you add to your Activity rings each day, up to 600 points a day. A competition lasts seven days, so the maximum is 4,200 points, and whoever has more at the end wins.
Can you do an Apple Watch competition with multiple friends?
Each Apple Watch competition is between you and one friend, so there is no built-in group leaderboard. For a group, use a step challenge app such as Stepr, where up to 100 people join one league with a code.
Is there a step challenge app for Fitbit and Apple Watch together?
Yes, if everyone has an iPhone. Stepr reads Apple Health, which receives steps from Apple Watch, from Garmin Connect, and from Fitbit through the Google Health app, so all three compete on the same count.
