About Stepr
Stepr is a step challenge app for iPhone where friends, families and work teams compete in invite-only leagues. The daily step goal starts at 2,000 and rises by 250 every day; anyone under it when the day ends is out, and the last one walking wins. Steps are read from Apple Health and the phone's motion sensor and signed by the device, so nothing can be typed in. Joining is free, there are no cash pots, and a league holds up to 100 players.
Who makes it
Stepr is built and run by Joseph Tung, an independent developer, with no outside funding and no team. He also makes Doorpost and Eggy. Every guide on this site is written by him, and the rules described in them are the rules the app enforces.
The idea is small on purpose. Step apps usually give you a number and a leaderboard, and a leaderboard is won on day one by the person who walks the most anyway. A bar that everyone must clear, and that rises a little every day, keeps the whole group in the game until it genuinely gets hard, and the only way to lose is to stop.

- iPhone (iOS 15 or later); no Android app yet. Anyone with a league's code can follow its live standings page in a browser.

- Free to join. Hosting: League Pro $18.99 once per league, Host Pro $9.99/month or $49.99/year. Hosting is free during launch.
- Verification
- Steps are read from the iPhone's motion sensor and Apple Health, signed with Apple's App Attest, and cannot be entered by hand. Every player sees which kind of device recorded each count.
- Privacy
- Raw health data never leaves the phone. Members of a league see a display name, in/out status, today's steps, total and device type. No ads, no data sold.
